How to choose fiber laser cutting machine or CO2 laser cutting machine?

1. How does the material being processed influence the laser choice?

Where the cutting tasks involve wood, plastics, glass or textiles all the way to paper, the CO2 laser is needed with its far infra-red radiation, and the cutting tasks invole only metal, fiber laser cutting is the best choice.

2. What other factors must be considerd before making a final choice.Output Power

For today’s current industrial applications, laser output power is not a limiting factor. This may happen if special large focal spots, gap bridging etc. are required, and in this case, it is recommended to review if this is a laser application at all. Laser power should always be optimized in application trials. It is recommended to plan for reserves that may possibly be needed in the light of industrial environmental conditions.

Flexibility of beam guidance-suitability for robot operation

With the CO2 laser, the beam is directed via several deflection mirrors, therefore not as flexible as with fiber lasers. If more than three deflection mirrors are needed with the CO2 laser for guiding the beam, it may make sense to think about using a fiber laser.

The process fiber of the fiber laser can easily be connected to the processing optics or robot and be guided flexibly. The fiber laser does not have to be positioned next to the processing machine, because only the fiber

needs to be connected. There are various lengths available, the standard is a fiber length of 15 to 20 meters. Depending on the beam quality, it is possible to work with lengths of up to 100m.

Occurrence of spatters at welding applications

There may be increased occurrence of spatters when using the fiber laser for welding applications. If the component to be manufactured will be for example, not be visible in the final product or perhaps even lacquered, this aspect is negligible. Therefore, the first question to be answered is whether the possible incidence of splashing may be acceptable.

The Advantages of Laser Beam Machining

Traditional machining includes the use of metal machining tools such as planers, lathes and mills. This process uses sharpened metal pieces to cut and shape other metal objects. Though this can be done with precision, a nontraditional method of machining known as laser beam machining, or LBM, can be used to cut metal with even greater precision on numerous surfaces including those not made from metal.

Material Vaporization

According to EngineersHandbook, laser beam machining is precisely manipulating a beam of coherent light to vaporise unwanted material. The intensity of the laser used in such applications can be manipulated to bore precise holes on numerous surfaces without machine waste. The laser vaporises material instead of moving it as with traditional machining tools, making the cuts and holes much cleaner and free of debris.


In traditional machining, the work-piece and the machining tool have to be precisely calibrated and measured, then once the piece is moved, all measurements must be made a second time. This is done to make cuts and shape metals to specific degrees and angles or to form a specific diameter and depth for cuts or holes. With laser beam machining, the machine can be set to the specifics of the project and make the desired cuts or holes with a precision down to one micron. Once set, the machining process will run automatically and take less time, making second or third measurements unnecessary.


Laser beam machining as compared to traditional machining processes is much gentler. With laser beam machining, the machinist is able to machine cut thin pieces of metal and other material without worrying about damaging or otherwise warping the piece as with traditional machining tools. The variety of material that laser beam machining can work on is also much greater than with conventional machining tools. According to EngineersHandbook, the laser can execute scribing, marking and drilling; cut thin metals and ceramics; trim resistors; and process silicon, plastic, graphite and diamond with tolerances to one micron.
